Illinois

In the state of Illinois, Most of the off-road parks in Illinois are privately owned lands being made available for public use. Some of these parks are privately funded and finacially supported with monies you pay to get in. Some of these parks are privately owned but PUBLICLY funded with the monies collected from your ATV registrations along with a small gate fee. In the parks that are funded with registration money, you are required by law to have your ATV registered and to display an Illinois state sticker. To have your ATV registered in another state that also accepts the Illinois sticker is also acceptable.

The Wilburn Ruffcorn Farm

Central IL. It's private property that is owned by a man named Wilbur Ruffcorn, but it is open to the public 365 days a year. Most privately owned places shut down to ATVs when hunting season comes in. Mr. Ruffcorn doesn't. There is approximately 400-500 acres of riding area intermixed among his fields. There are lots of hills to climb, plenty of mud to play in, a nice big rock bottom creek to splash around in, and even a little sand to roost. Not sure how many miles of trails because it is spread out over such a big area. It's a lot of fun though, and a great place to spend a day riding. The charge is $10.00 per person, although he has been known to give "special" family rates. He has discounted rates for 2 day (primitive) camping also, usually $15.00.

The place is located about 2 miles south of Loraine, IL. From Hwy. 61, turn South on County Road 1500. Follow it about a mile, where it will turn to the East. Another 1/4 mile to the first house on the right. There should be a small sign by the driveway. Pull in and stop at the house.

Wilbur Ruffcorn 1530 N 2500th Ave Loraine, IL 62349 ...Ph: 217-938-2483

It is One of the Premier areas for hitting the dunes on the east coast. The park is aprox. 400 acres of sand dunes. The terrain is varying. BIG dunes, Bowls, Flat areas. Flags are required and MUST meet their requirments. The park is RIGHT on the lake. You can ride hard all morning, take a picnic lunch onto the beach, swim in the lake to cool off, then hit the dunes again. This place is really popular, and parking is limited. They now have a system in place to control the traffic comming into the park. You are assigned a time in which you can show up to enter the park. I also heard that beginning in 2002, they may begin checking the db level of each exhaust. Drive towards Mears, and then follow the signs. You cant miss it. You can purchase state stickers at the park, and flags across the street at a place called "Apple tree". The park is seasonal, it's not open all year around. Call for more info....616-873-3083.

St Joe State park
The most distinctive feature of St. Joe State Park is the 2,000 acres of riding area for off-road vehicle (ORV) use. Trails wind through the wooded portions of the park, as well as through 800 acres of sand flats, an area created by the sandlike residue - or tailings - from the lead mining process. Signs clearly mark the boundaries of the ORV area, and all off-road vehicles must stay within these boundaries at all times. A staging area is available for parking and unloading vehicles. Snowmobiles are permitted during the winter months. For the convenience of ORV users, a campground is located near the riding area with 15 electric and 35 basic sites. All campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Laundry facilities, modern restrooms, hot showers, a playground and a dumping station are located in the camping area. A trail from the campground to the ORV area provides access for unlicensed ORVs that are not permitted on park roads.

Miles of fun-filled four wheeling can be found in Southwest Wisconsin. The Cheese Country Recreational Trail boasts 47 miles of improved, abandoned railroad grade extending from Mineral Point in Iowa County, to Darlington in Lafayette County, on to Monroe in Green County. The trail surface consists of mainly flat, dry, level riding, following the former Milwaukee Railroad grade that runs parallel with the picturesque Pectonica River. The trail is appropriately named after the approximately 30 cheese factories in Lafayette, Green and Iowa counties, producing large quantities of cheeses such as Swiss, Muenster and Limburger.
The Pecatonica Trail, affords approximately 15 miles of shared used trail along an abandoned railroad grade from Calamine, where it connects with the Cheese Country Trail, running west to Belmont and the Lafayette County line near Platteville. This trail is open April 1 through November 15.
ATV fun can be found on the stretch of trail in the Blanchardville, Holldale, Darlington, and Gratiot areas. This trail connects with the Cheese Country Trail south of Calamine and again just north of Darlington.
From April 1 through November 15 when the Cheese Country Trail is open, riders can enjoy the journey.
